"Dance With My Father Again" is a collaborative mixed-media tribute to one of boxing's most meaningful father-daughter relationships. The work imagines an intimate sparring session between Laila Ali and Muhammad Ali—a dance of affection, mentorship, and legacy disguised as combat.
At the center of the composition, Laila launches an overhand right, rendered entirely in paint by Ydaly Mer. Opposite her, Muhammad Ali gracefully slips the punch, his familiar movement suggesting not defense, but invitation. It is the choreography of a father teaching, encouraging, and celebrating his daughter's strength.
Muhammad Ali's figure is constructed from hand-applied fabrics, blurring the line between painting, textile, and sculpture. His custom boxing trunks feature an intricate pattern of gold chain links intertwined with blooming roses.
The chain links symbolize the unbreakable bonds of lineage, protection, and inherited greatness. The roses speak to tenderness within strength—the beauty of fatherhood, the fleeting nature of time, and the enduring love that survives beyond physical presence. Roses have long represented remembrance and devotion; here they become a visual language for a daughter carrying forward the lessons, spirit, and grace of her father.
Surrounding the pair, the crowd and distant ring ropes are painted onto the canvas, while the foreground ropes are formed from actual silk cords mounted over the surface. These suspended silk lines extend into the viewer's space, placing them inside the ring itself—as witness to a moment that never occurred publicly, yet feels profoundly true.
This work is not simply about boxing. It is about the rare privilege of sharing a language understood by only two people. It is about a daughter being seen by her father, and a father finding immortality through the continuation of his teachings. Their exchange becomes a dance—a rhythm of love, discipline, respect, and joy that only they could perform.
In a world where many wish for one more conversation, one more embrace, or one more lesson from someone they cherish, Dance With My Father Again imagines what it might look like to have that opportunity: one final round, one final movement, one final dance.
