Few phrases in history have transcended sport the way Muhammad Ali's poetic proclamation has. More than a boxing metaphor, it became a declaration of confidence, imagination, and self-belief. Yet behind the bravado of The Greatest lived another side of Ali—a playful spirit, a master storyteller, and a man whose humor could fill a room as easily as his presence.
I'LL A-MAYZE reintroduces audiences to that Muhammad Ali.
Captured in a moment of exaggerated astonishment, Ali is depicted holding physical manifestations of his own legendary words: an enormous butterfly and an oversized bee. The expression on his face is one of childlike surprise, transforming a familiar icon into a relatable figure capable of wonder, amusement, and delight.
The title, I'LL A-MAYZE, serves as a layered tribute. At first glance, it echoes the confidence and charisma synonymous with Ali—"I'll amaze you." Yet embedded within the title is the name of seven-year-old Isla Mayze Dixon, whose imagination and artistic contributions helped bring the sculpture to life alongside her father, artist and Greatness Was When...! founder Mello Dixon. In doing so, the work becomes not only a celebration of Muhammad Ali, but a testament to creativity passed between generations.
The piece evolved through three distinct phases: an initial digital concept, an illustrated rendering, and ultimately a fully fabricated mixed-media textile sculpture. Displayed together, these stages reveal an artistic process that mirrors memory itself—ideas imagined, interpreted, and transformed into tangible objects that can be touched, studied, and experienced.
At the center of the composition is a monumental butterfly constructed from reclaimed hand-drawn canvas fragments by world-renowned ceramic artist Roberto Lugo. Salvaged from previous works and studio remnants, these materials are given renewed purpose through Dixon's vision, extending an ongoing artistic dialogue between Lugo and Greatness Was When...! The butterfly's vibrant patchwork surface preserves traces of Lugo's hand while symbolizing rebirth, movement, and the enduring power of collaboration.
Opposite the butterfly rests an exaggerated bumblebee meticulously assembled from layers of suede, cotton, polyester, and velour textiles. Its abdomen is wrapped in luxurious golden velour embossed with a honeycomb pattern, while miniature bumble bees crawl across its surface, creating a subtle landscape of motion and industry. The bee becomes a metaphor for labor, community, and the unseen work required to sustain greatness.
Throughout the sculpture, rich suedes converse with soft velours, reclaimed canvases meet contemporary fabrics, and hand-drawn textures coexist with machine-crafted materials. The result is a tactile portrait that blurs the boundaries between fine art, fashion, sculpture, and storytelling.
While Ali is often memorialized through images of triumph and defiance, I'LL A-MAYZE seeks something more intimate. It invites viewers to witness a champion momentarily disarmed by his own mythology—to imagine the possibility that even Muhammad Ali might have laughed at the absurdity of finally holding a butterfly large enough to float with and a bee substantial enough to sting the imagination.
In the world of Greatness Was When...!, greatness is not confined to championship belts, historical milestones, or carefully rehearsed speeches.
Sometimes greatness is inherited.
